The city of Kaliningrad could rightfully be called the world’s organ capital, and its Cathedral is a unique venue that has brought together musicians from across the world. And it will be no exaggeration to say that this September, Kaliningrad and the Cathedral became the centre of musical life in Russia and beyond. As Cathedral director Vera Tariverdieva has said about the playbill of the milestone 10th Competition and its accompanying festivals, “The stars are all coming here!”.

The Kaliningrad Cathedral is also recieving the "Organ+" festival, traditionally accompanying the Competition. Their schedule included a rich variety of events. The geography of Organ+ concerts included familiar Kaliningrad locations such as the Cathedral and the Friedrichsburg Gate as well as experimental venues such as the Tram Depot No. 1 which, on 9th September, hosted a concert titled, Here’s What’s Been Going On with Me, marking the 90th anniversary of the film director Eldar Ryazanov and featuring Emma Ryazanova, Gosha Kutsenko, and the Traditional Instrument Soloists’ Ensemble of Kaliningrad conducted by Andrey Stepanenko. The choice of location for this concert was not an arbitrary one; it is the depot of the city tram decorated with photographs of the competition’s finalists.

On 6th September, the evening of music by Leonid Desyatnikov, titled A Poet’s Love and Life and featuring Yulia Korpacheva (soprano), Alexey Goribol (piano), Semyon Gurevich (violin), and Rustam Komachkov (cello) was held outside by Friedrichsburg Gate: the part of the fortress Friedrichsburg 17th century. The Organ+ festival concluded with a concert by the American professor and organist James Higdon titled Bach, Cathedrals, and a Bit of America. James Higdon’s concert will also be dedicated to the Kaliningrad Cathedral’s anniversary.

For the first time in the history of the Organ+ festival, Kaliningrad hosted a series of concerts of the Open Festival Territory of Peace – Territory of Music. This year, as part of that festival, two international celebrity musicians and Distinguished Artists of Russia, the pianist Boris Berezovsky and the cellist Boris Andrianov, appeared in concert at the Cathedral. On 4th September, Boris Andrianov exclusively presented a programmatic concert with an ensemble including Anton Dressler (clarinet, Italy), Rodion Petrov (violin), Fyodor Belugin (alto), Anna Koshkina (cello), Marfa Gorynya (percussion) and Natalia Stadnikova (synthesizer).

Then, on 5th September, took place a truly grand event: the first concert in Kaliningrad by Boris Berezovsky, one of the greatest virtuoso pianists of our time, an awardee of the Tchaikovsky Competition and holder of numerous prestigious prizes.
